Essential Hygiene Habits for Teens

4 min read

Adolescence is a complicated phase for most people, marked by hormonal, physical and psychological transformations, which lead to some anxiety and vulnerability. Those who have passed know well: pimples, acne, body image, mood swings, new friendships, etc. - everything counts for the self-esteem and confidence of young people, and the obligation of parents is to support them and guide them at this stage with patience (even if they find them boring..!) for they remain the "pillar" in the education of children.

Since childhood parents teach their children hygiene habits, such as bathing regularly, washing hands before eating and after going to the bathroom, washing their teeth in the morning and evening... When they enter puberty young people will have to include more hygiene habits but it remains necessary to teach and explain why importance of them. Creating hygiene routines from an early age and promoting the autonomy of your daily personal care and taste for the image, will be a great help for the younger ones, since personal hygiene at this age is directly and related to self-esteem, well-being, quality of life, and the relationship with their peers.

Teens will need extra time in the bathroom! To see how many pimples they have... parents can help by being more patient and giving them a little more privacy.

To help parents and young teens include simple care in their routine, SweetCare decided to talk about it and also selected some essential products from Beauty Edit TEENS:

Teens

The period of adolescence is marked by hormonal, physical and mental changes, which can sometimes be overwhelming for both adolescents and parents. A simple and sincere communication about the various changes they are going through is important.

Maintaining hygiene is important for young people at puberty to be healthy and have more confidence. Hormonal and physical changes are important, but even more so is your emotional and psychological state. We must be attentive and give the space they need without failing to be available and act when necessary. With a little information and guidance, your teenage child will be on the way to good personal care that supports physical and emotional health.

Let's highlight some good hygiene practices that adolescents should understand:

New sweat glands appear in the armpits and genital areas, which will produce a sweat that feeds bacteria causing body odor, which also passes to clothes that are in direct contact with the skin. It is important to shower more regularly to eliminate dead cells, sweat, bodily fluids and these bacteria no longer have food and will have fewer odors. In addition to cleaning, it will be necessary to include in the daily routine the deodorant or antiperspirant to reduce odors and the amount of sweat produced by the glands.

They're also going to start having smelly feet... so they have to wash more often and clean very well even between their fingers, wear cotton socks that will better absorb the moisture they produce both in the day to day or when playing sports, and can still use deodorant on the feet if necessary. Switch shoes to allow them to dry well and can also use a deodorant on the shoes to eliminate odors.

Since childhood they should wash their teeth at least twice a day, and now in adolescence besides brushing can include the use of dental floss, to ensure a good breath, healthy gums and strong teeth! Also keep regular appointments to the dentist.

For girls there is a great challenge that is menstruation. It may take a few months to stabilize and turn into a regular monthly menstrual cycle. It's girls who have menstruation but it's a subject that boys should know so it's not taboo and look natural. There will arise doubts and need to talk to those who have been through it, mother, sister, friend ...Will know several options such as sanitary dressings, tampons or menstrual cup and choose what is more comfortable. They should be attentive and realize if the flow is normal (bleeding up to 8 days and up to 80 mL per cycle) and consult gynecologist.

They begin to grow hair in various areas of the body and face. In common appear the hairs in the armpits and intimate areas, in the body and face the hair of the boys will be stronger and will even like to show, but girls may not feel the same in relation and want to blonde or remove. There are many alternatives that both can choose when they want and the most important thing is to feel good.

With all hormonal changes in the face also manifests greater production of sebum, the skin in the forehead, nose and chin begins to have more oiliness, dilated pores and rashes. It is important to include a simple routine adapted to this new phase to prevent inflammation and infection of the skin. Cleansing the face, moisturizing and controlling oil is essential. Avoid touching your hands on your face, avoid having your hair cover your forehead, not scoff at the pimples... There are many alternatives to help "dry" the pimples, eliminate black spots.

  • NAIL CARE

Keep your nails clean and short, with straight cut to avoid broken or jammed nails. Careful who likes to bit their nails... it's an easy way for bacteria to spread. Arrange strategies to try to catch this addiction, such as bitter varnish or code word to remind them to stop.

  • HAIR CARE

As in the face, also on the scalp there may be greater production of sebum, by the sebaceous glands that at this stage are more active! In addition to perspiring more, they will also have more oily hair and more odor. They will easily notice and can simply use a shampoo that helps balance the scalp and control oil. These adaptations are normal and there are simple answers.

Young people have many options that they can choose to have the style they prefer... radical hairstyle, shaving eyebrows, arranging and painting nails, beauty routines, makeup, earrings and piercings... How can there be health issues to take into account parents should talk to their children.

At this age parents already have to empower young people and to prepare them for any eventuality, if they get hurt when they are alone. They should learn how to treat a wound or cut (if you go out on the street to wash it with plenty of water and then make a bandage with anti-ethical ointment and cover with sterile adhesive), you should know when to ask for help and call the emergency service.

Care for contact lenses, keeping glasses clean and any necessary hygiene measures for those who wear braces on their teeth are also important areas to be discussed with children as needed.
