Sesderma Routines for Pregnancy

5 min read

While some women go through pregnancy without noticing major skin changes (at least on their face), the majority report more or less noticeable changes. The skin becomes particularly susceptible to the intense hormonal fluctuations that characterize this period. From increased sensitivity to acne tendencies and the melasma-associated dark spots, various skin concerns can affect pregnant women.

Therefore, there isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” routine for pregnancy; rather, the ideal routine is tailored to each pregnant woman’s specific skin needs.

Another factor to consider when designing a pregnancy skincare routine is the active ingredients not recommended during pregnancy. Although, by definition, a cosmetic product does not reach the bloodstream and therefore does not pose a risk to the baby, a general consensus exists against the use of certain active ingredients for precautionary reasons. These include:

- Vitamin A and its derivatives: While excellent for aging signs, pigmentation control, and preventing follicle blockages that can lead to acne, they are not recommended during pregnancy.

- Salicylic Acid: A valuable ally in oil and acne control but contraindicated in concentrations above 2% and for application over large areas.

- Essential oils, kojic acid, arbutin, sunscreens with benzophenone or octocrylene, caffeine and theine in high concentrations, St. John’s Wort oil, and others, are less commonly used but worth noting.

For Alpha Hydroxy Acids, such as glycolic acid, they may be suitable if already in use and the skin is accustomed to the renewing effects. Starting glycolic acid for the first time during pregnancy is generally not recommended due to potential sensitivity, discomfort, or peeling, which can increase the risk of pigmentation—already heightened due to hormonal factors. If it’s already part of the routine and in concentrations below 10%, glycolic acid can be safely maintained, always with adequate sun protection.

Concerns about parabens are also raised in pregnancy. The authorized parabens within cosmetic regulations are proven to be safe in authorized concentrations, so their presence does not justify avoiding a cosmetic product during pregnancy.

Routine Suggestions

With pigmentation prevention/reduction and oiliness/acne control identified as common skin needs in pregnancy, here are some suggested routines:

Hyperpigmentation

Some of the usual depigmenting ingredients (such as retinol, kojic acid, or arbutin) are not recommended during pregnancy. We suggest a routine featuring tranexamic acid and vitamin C, ingredients with depigmenting properties that are completely safe during pregnancy:

Morning:

Sesderma

1 – Cleanse with Sensyses Cleanser Lightening. This cleanser with stabilized and liposome-encapsulated vitamin C protects the skin from oxidative stress, enhances brightness, evens skin tone, and prevents aging by stimulating collagen synthesis. Apply using a cotton pad or compress with gentle circular motions until skin is clean.

2 – On clean, dry skin, apply a few drops of C-VIT 5 Liposomal Serum with a gentle massage until fully absorbed. It includes five types of stabilized, liposome-encapsulated vitamin C for maximum antioxidant, brightening, and even skin tone effects, along with anti-aging ingredients like hyaluronic acid, proteoglycans, a tightening complex, and centella asiatica to reduce wrinkles and firmness loss.

3 – Hydrate with Azelac RU Luminous Fluid SPF50. This hydrating product offers a gentle, non-photosensitizing depigmenting effect, thanks to its encapsulated, mild depigmenting agents. It also has luminous pigments that reflect light on the skin’s surface, providing immediate brightness and SPF50 protection.

Although this product has SPF50, it’s a hydrating fluid with UVB protection rather than a broad-spectrum sunscreen. We recommend finishing with a dedicated sunscreen.

4 – Sun protection with Repaskin Urban 365 Depigmenting SPF50+. This sunscreen protects against UVA, UVB, IR, blue light, and pollution. It helps prevent and control pregnancy-related pigmentation due to its formula with azelaic acid, ferulic acid, and niacinamide.

Night:

In the evening, use the same cleansing and serum products. For hydration, we recommend C-Vit Radiance Luminous Fluid to enhance the depigmenting benefits of vitamin C.

Acne-Prone Skin

To control oiliness and acne-prone skin during pregnancy, we suggest:

Sesderma

1 – Cleanse with Sensyses Cleanser Sebum, or for a rinse-off option, try Salises Soap-Free Cream Foam Cleanser.

2 – Moisturize with Salises Moisturizing Gel Cream, designed for combination and acne-prone skin. With both free and liposome-encapsulated salicylic acid, it helps regulate sebum production and keeps acne symptoms under control.

3 – Finish the morning routine with sunscreen. We recommend Repaskin Invisible Fluid SPF50+. This product provides UVA, UVB, IR, blue light protection, and acts as a photorepairing agent, thanks to repair enzymes encapsulated in liposomes that support DNA repair from sun-induced damage. Ideal for oily and acne-prone skin, it’s non-comedogenic.

And for those who experience pregnancy without significant skin changes, maintaining healthy and beautiful skin, we suggest a simple beauty routine with hydrating, antioxidant, and brightening actions to help prevent pigmentation:

1 – Cleanse with Hidraven Soap-Free Foam Cream. It effectively cleanses and removes makeup without compromising the skin barrier, thanks to soothing plant extracts. Apply to damp skin with circular motions to create a light foam, then rinse thoroughly.

2 – On clean, dry skin, apply 3-4 drops of Oceanskin Hydrating Serum, formulated with marine-based ingredients and Ses Hydra Complex to provide the necessary hydration and elasticity. Suitable for all skin types.

3 – Hydrate with C-Vit Radiance Luminous Fluid. Stabilized, liposome-encapsulated vitamin C protects against oxidative stress, brightens skin, evens tone, and prevents aging by stimulating collagen synthesis. It also includes luminous pigments that reflect light on the skin, providing an immediate glow. For dry skin, consider the richer facial cream.

Body

Esthederm

For body skin, the primary concern during pregnancy is often the prevention and treatment of stretch marks. Rapid body volume changes frequently lead to stretch marks, and sagging is common postpartum.

To prevent these issues, we recommend our body care range with liposome-encapsulated ingredients. Thanks to nanotechnology, these penetrate the skin more deeply, ensuring greater efficacy. We highlight Estryses Lotion for preventing and reducing stretch marks and Sesnatura Firming Cream for Breasts and Body.
