Art of Mixology

Mixology

This process requires a bit more DIY spirit than the pump-and-go products we've become accustomed to, but these cocktails add to the effectiveness and luxurious feel of the individual products.

While mixology in makeup have gained a lot of fame (mixing different shades of lipsticks, using lip and cheek sticks, and the trend of two-tone eyeshadows), skincare mixology is still an area that requires more research and attention.

Using too many products without understanding their chemical formulations and correct combinations can end badly (redness, rashes, irritation and dryness are some common signs that show products aren't working for you), but the general rules are:

  • do not mix salicylic acid and glycolic acid;
  • do not mix retinol with vitamin C or salicylic/glycolic acids if you have sensitive skin;
  • water-based formulas before oil-based ones;
  • benzoyl peroxide when used in combination with retinols can lead to redness and may cause a burning sensation;
  • glycolic acid, lactic acid and salicylic acid - ingredients found in anti-aging and anti-acne facial cleansers - should be used in very low concentrations.
