Gingivitis in Pregnancy

2 min read

Pregnancy gingivitis is related to hormonal changes, with increased blood flow to the gum tissues. Thus the gums swell and become more susceptible to bleeding gums when brushing. This change may occur from the 2nd month of pregnancy until the end.

Oral hygiene is essential during pregnancy, and if there is gingivitis (gum inflammation and bleeding when brushing) it is even more important to prevent progression to periodontitis. This disease affects the structures around the tooth, alveolar bone, and the periodontal ligament that attaches the tooth root to the alveolar bone. The loss of structures is not recovered, but progression of the disease can be prevented.

Uncontrolled periodontitis leads to tooth loss.

How to care for the gums during pregnancy?

During pregnancy oral hygiene should be reinforced because it is a more susceptible phase, where there is a lot of nausea, heartburn, vomiting, etc.

With the excitement of this phase, many mothers-to-be pamper their belly and body, putting on various creams to avoid getting marks on their belly and forgetting a little about the oral hygiene routine that is so important.

Pierre Fabre Oral Care presents different solutions to prevent and treat gum problems.

Arthrodont Classic

Pregnant consumers who experience gum sensitivity or bleeding gums should use a very soft brush. The Elgydium Clinic Sensitive toothbrush is indicated because it is very soft and effectively removes plaque. In the first phase (bleeding when brushing), you should use ArthrodontClassic toothpaste 2 to 3 times a day for 1 month. The association of a fluoride mouthwash helps remineralize the teeth.

Eludril Protect

Eludril Protect should be mouthed with 15 ml (pure), for 30 seconds, 2 times a day. In this phase it is very important to remineralize the teeth due to the presence of acids in the mouth with nausea and heartburn.

In case of vomiting you should rinse with water and wait 30 minutes before brushing your teeth to prevent the acids from spreading over your teeth.

Arthrodont Protect

After 1 month, the recommended maintenance toothpaste is Arthrodont Protect, which acts on the gums and has fluoride to remineralize and strengthen the teeth. Eludril Protect mouthwash should always be used as a mouthwash twice a day.

If you have bleeding gums, you should never stop brushing your teeth, and the brush should always touch the gums, to remove the bacterial plaque well. The movements can be short, circular or back and forth, and done without excessive force.
