The despair of dry feet

3 min read

DRY SKIN

When we talk about dry skin we immediately think of regions such as the face, hands and legs, but we hardly remember the members responsible for our support: the feet.

Although much neglected, dry feet are more common than we imagine. The most recent data show that about 20% of people over 21 years of age have suffered from cracks in the lower limbs, especially in the heels. With each step we take, we apply the pressure of our body weight on the heels and the skin undergoes a natural stretch. But if the skin on the heel fails to enlarge sufficiently, it will sag and the crack is almost certain.

For many, the situation is nothing more than an aesthetic issue. But for others, dryness reaches extreme levels and the simple act of walking or running can become very uncomfortable and painful, inevitably ending up being a disabling factor.

AND WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN?

Although quite common, dry feet can occur for several reasons: from unfavorable daily habits (such as spending too much time standing up, wearing shoes that are unsuitable for the physiognomy of the foot, or that are not let the feet properly breathe), to specific clinical conditions ( fungal infections, vitamin deficiency, diabetes or thyroid disorders).

The time of the year also has a direct influence on the dryness of feet's skin. In the colder months and with the abuse of closed shoes and thick socks, it is common to have dry and dehydrated skin because you are not allowing your feet to breathe properly. In summer, the main cause of dry feet is dehydration caused by intense exposure to aggressive agents, such as the sun, heat, sand, chlorine, perspiration, in addition to the frequent use of open shoes that make the feet more unprotected.

Interestingly, the likelihood of calluses, blisters, fissures and marked dryness of the feet also has a gender prevalence. According to the IPFH (Institute of Preventive Foot Health, in the United States), the female population is two and a half times more likely to suffer from dry feet than the male population. The main symptoms described include desquamation, itching, redness, pain, bleeding and even loss of skin sensitivity.

PREVENTING AND COMBATING FEET DRYNESS IS MORE SIMPLE THAN YOU IMAGINED

First of all, it is crucial to recognize the importance of the permanent attention that we must dedicate to our feet, subject to so many pathologies and diverse problems that often end up degenerating into postural deficiencies and / or pathologies of the spine.

The skin is the first barrier we have against external aggressions and, without proper and regular care, it begins to resent and become increasingly fragile. Above all, hydration is an essential gesture.

- The first care to be taken involves the drying process of the feet. Whether when you are coming out of the water at the beach or in the pool, or even from the bath, drying your feet properly (with special attention in the area between the toes) is absolutely indispensable in preventing complications, namely fungal infections;
- Promoting a delicate and effective exfoliation twice a week is a simple gesture that smooths the skin and reduces the likelihood of calluses;
- Apply daily a moisturizing cream that guarantees a deep and prolonged hydration is essential to keep the skin healthy, nourished and properly protected;
- Finally, resorting to specialized repairing care as soon as there is evidence of the need of greater care, is the recommended gesture to prevent the most diverse complications.

COMPLEMENTARY TIPS TO ENSURE SKIN HEALTH

There are some recurring practices that directly influence foot health and that can be easily adopted:

- Prefer closed shoes, comfortable and airy, especially on days of greater mobility;
- Apply moisturizing care every day, without exception. Creating a daily hydration routine makes it much easier: right after the shower or, ideally, just before going to bed;
- Put on light cotton socks before going to sleep and after applying the moisturizing cream, a gesture that promotes the prolonged absorption of the product and allows it to work throughout the night;
- Avoid very hot water in the bath, as this enhances dehydration and as a consequence skin dryness.
