Know more about this revolutionary cosmetic ingredient and how you can improve your skincare routine!

Bakuchiol, what is it?

This ingredient that appeared almost as if "fallen from the sky" can be found in the seeds and leaves of some plants, especially in psoralea corylifolia (or babchi) widely used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.

The recent buzz generated around this molecule is due to the fact that this could be one alternative to retinol, with great resultsas anti-aging treatment, but without its unwanted side effects.

With a different in structure, some studies shows behaviors very similar to retinol, with significant improvements in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, dryness and elasticity.

In another study, the efficacy of the same concentration of retinol and bakuchiol (0.5%) was evaluated for 12 days. During this period, retinol was applied only at night and bakuchiol 2 times a day.

There were very similar results among themselves, with improvements in hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, redness and in cases of bakuchiol, the skin presented less flaking when compared to those tested with retinol.

When should Bakuchiol be used?

Something important to retain is that Bakuchiol is not a derivative of vitamin A and its structure is not even similar to the forms of retinol usually found. If you already have a well-structured routine with retinoids, such as isotretinoin (one of the forms of retinoic acid and more potent than retinol), because your dermatologist has prescribed it we advise you to continue. Bakuchiol is recommended for skins that want start a routine with retinol, using this ingredient as a "slight" introduction or even as an alternative for the most sensitive skin. Still, in case of doubt, you should always consult and advise your dermatologist what the best method to adopt.
